We come bringing news of Patch 7!

I’m thrilled to share some exciting news with you all! However, before you dive headfirst into our upcoming patch, please hold on a moment. We have a lot on our plate right now as we work tirelessly to deliver the initial version of our modding tools, along with those wicked endings and a slew of fixes, enhancements, and other improvements that we’ll discuss in greater depth during our next Community Update. Stay tuned!

As a passionate gamer of Baldur’s Gate 3, I’m thrilled to share that come September, we’ll be releasing an authorized mod for adding a trendy mullet hairstyle to Lae’zel. Living on the edge and embracing change is part of the gaming experience after all!

In our previous community communication, we expressed our desire for you to try out Patch 7 and the Baldur’s Gate 3 Toolkit in a pre-release stage. Your valuable input will help us make improvements before these updates become publicly available.

The testing for Patch 7 is being divided into a two-part procedure. In the initial phase, we will collaborate closely with a select group of mod creators from the community. This marks the closed alpha stage, during which these individuals can contribute to refining our modding tools and experimenting with bringing their existing mods to Baldur’s Gate 3 using our Toolkit.

I’m thrilled that the closed alpha for our project begins today, on June 3rd! Initially, we’ll be extending invitations to select mod authors to join us. Over the course of time, we plan to bring in more talented individuals to contribute to this exciting endeavor.

Starting in July, we will begin accepting registrations for an additional closed beta testing phase. This phase is expected to accommodate around 1,000 participants using PCs. Our goal is for you to join us in testing the user-created mods that emerged during the alpha stage.

Our plan is to carefully address your feedback during the summer months, allowing us sufficient time to perfect Patch 7 before its September release. In the interim, we have numerous exciting offerings planned for you, including anniversary celebrations reflecting on the past few months since launch. Additionally, we’re continuing our efforts to introduce an in-game photo mode, crossplay functionality, and further bug fixes that will be rolled out progressively.

For experienced Baldur’s Gate 3 modders eager to advance their projects or novice creators looking to realize their ideas, our revamped modding infrastructure offers a user-friendly solution for handling and distributing mods across all platforms where the game is available. This upgrade includes enhanced compatibility, efficient tools, and comprehensive documentation.

First things first, what is a mod?

Modifying a game allows you to transform various elements, such as making fireballs pink, amplifying the attack power of a sausage held in hand, or granting every Faerûn resident a personal handgun – altering the game’s appearance or behavior in unique ways.

Using the authentic Baldur’s Gate 3 modification kit, you’ll be equipped to introduce fresh weapons and armor, establish novel classes and subclasses, construct complex magical spells, personalize your game dice visuals, and distribute your modifications among a vibrant community of innovators.

What does official support mean, as opposed to mods I’m using right now?

Revisions to Baldur’s Gate 3 and clashes among third-party modifications may lead to instability within the game, impeding the proper function of these mods. This is where the developers’ official backing becomes essential.

While it’s impossible to stop unauthorized modifications outside of our controlled process, creating our own modding tools will enhance compatibility across different platforms and enable us to guarantee proper functioning of these mods in Baldur’s Gate 3.

One way to rephrase this in clear and conversational language is: «This approach will provide a more seamless experience at the expense of more script-based modifications, which can still be implemented outside our system. Essentially, you’ll have two options for customizing Baldur’s Gate 3, but we’ll only endorse mods that are uploaded to mod.io.»

Will the support be rolled out in phases?

As a passionate gamer excited about Baldur’s Gate 3, I’m thrilled to share that we’re extending special invitations to renowned mod creators on Steam. They’ll get an exclusive sneak peek into our new modding environment, checking out the tools and acclimating themselves to the process of adapting their existing mods or crafting brand-new ones for upload.

During the initial phase, involved mod creators can share their insights directly with us while we carry out in-house progressions and trials. They will have the advantage of utilizing a live development platform, thereby gaining early access to upcoming functionalities before the public launch.

Which platforms will be able to use and install mods?

Initially debuting on PC, we plan to expand availability to a larger audience and additional platforms soon. This includes Mac users, along with PlayStation and Xbox gamers.

Which platforms will be able to use the modding tools to create new mods?

On certain platforms, users can access and employ player-made mods for browsing, installation, and usage. However, the official modding tools will remain unavailable for console gamers.

PC users can look forward to utilizing the Baldur’s Gate 3 Toolkit to develop custom mods. However, only approved mods from this community-generated content will be accessible to console players following a selective approval process within the game.

How are mods curated for PC and console?

Before a mod can be used in a PC game through its browser, the system will perform stability checks and review the Terms of Service. For console users, an extra approval process is required to determine which PC mods are suitable for cross-platform use. Not every PC mod will make it to consoles, but we’ll provide clear guidelines on what content meets our requirements – ensuring that we can continue fostering the modding community within and beyond our official platform, without hindering unsupported creative mods on PC.

What mods won’t be available through mod.io?

Baldur’s Gate 3, being a role-playing game based on Dungeons & Dragons and produced in collaboration with our partners, adheres to specific rules to preserve the consistency of its fictional world.

That said, we want to support as much creative freedom as possible.

As a passionate advocate for mod.io and our collaborative community, my goal is to facilitate an environment where extensive modification is encouraged while adhering to established guidelines. By doing so, we aim to broaden the reach of user-created content, enabling it to grace as many player screens as possible, all while ensuring smooth cross-platform functionality. Although some NSFW mods and complex script modifications may not pass through our official pipeline, the opportunity to explore modding beyond these boundaries remains a viable option.

Due to the technical limitations and specific requirements of various platforms, it’s not possible to make direct edits or changes to key elements of a game, such as its storyline, cinematics, dialogues, quests, and local gameplay adjustments, for cross-platform compatibility.

As an avid supporter, I’m excited to collaborate with our valued partners in brainstorming creative solutions to broaden the scope of modding while adhering to the given limitations. We’ll work together to establish comprehensive guidelines that will ensure a clear and consistent understanding for everyone involved regarding what can be achieved.

I want to do things your modding pipeline doesn’t support. How will mod.io handle unsupported mods?

Unsupported modifications, such as custom scripts or adult content that don’t meet our pipeline’s approval due to platform-specific regulations, can be prepared locally using mod.io’s tools and then shared on alternative mod distribution sites.

This means that those mods can still be downloaded manually, and the game’s browser will still
recognise them and allow you to manage them in the mod load order of the game. However,
because they would be local and alter unsupported systems, there will not be embedded
support for checking for updates and syncing to others in a multiplayer session. Additionally, we will not be able to provide full technical support in case of crashes.

Our deep respect and admiration go out to the modding community for their tireless efforts and commitment. Rest assured, we have no intention of restricting modding activities solely to our approved channels. Instead, we remain fully invested in providing extensive support to this vibrant community, eagerly anticipating the innovative concepts you will bring to fruition!

Will Larian Studios provide any guidance for unsupported mods?

At the moment, we’re exploring the extent of assistance we can provide for unofficial mods. This involves considering if we should generate formal scripting API documentation and institute internal testing for tools like Script Extender to ensure compatibility among patch variations. Yet, please note that while we can give recommendations, we won’t be providing support for mods not within our development process.

Is there a long-term support plan for providing official modding support?

As a gamer, I can tell you that at the moment, due to the demands of ongoing development for new projects, we’re unable to offer extended support for this game beyond any necessary bug fixes post-release.

What will the Baldur’s Gate 3 Toolkit consist of?

Instead of just focusing on the game code structure for handling mods, we plan to provide a selection of our in-house development tools with the Baldur’s Gate 3 Toolkit. This will enable you to:

  • Access the editor to create your own mods.
  • Upload mods directly to mod.io servers.
  • Load levels read-only to look at all the local entities, as well as the setup, and test your mods in-game while creating them.
  • Get access to our internal editors for supported asset types such as textures and visual models, allowing you to override them directly in your mod through the developer interface.
  • Publish your mod via the editor where it will be moderated and made visible in the in-game browser, or pack your mod locally to upload to a third-party site.
  • Mod UIs through file editing. We will provide documentation that will explain how our internals are set up to solve mod loading/compatibility issues.
  • Within Baldur’s Gate 3 itself, you’ll be able to:
    • Download and manage your mods directly.
    • Manage multiplayer and save game files through a verification UI.
